Georgia-Pacific has an opening for a Buyer to support its Containerboard facility in Big Island, VA. As part of our Strategic Sourcing and Procurement group, this individual will be responsible for assisting in managing local procurement and storeroom operations in accordance with our SS&P vision and strategies. The individual must be self-directed, work with a high sense of urgency and possess the ability to solve problems and collaborate with others to meet the needs of Operations. The individual may also be asked to participate on centralized teams, special projects, and other initiatives to support continuous improvement and transformation for our businesses.

What You Will Do In Your Role

  • Ensure compliance with all safety, purchasing, fiduciary, stores and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Drive value creation through transformation, innovation, and process improvement.
  • Work with internal customers to identify and address unmet needs that align with procurement and business goals to deliver long-term value
  • Demonstrate a high degree of Customer Focus and an ability to effectively influence others.
  • Assist in implementing new sourcing/inventory strategies as a result of Accelerated Sourcing Transformation.
  • Lead and effectively manage change and transformational initiatives.
  • Utilize critical thinking skills to identify, analyze, and execute on opportunities to streamline processes and achieve the lowest total cost of ownership on projects, storeroom inventory, and other purchases.
  • Manage the procure-to-pay process (including invoice reconciliation management) and share knowledge of these processes with internal customers as needed.
  • Own the competitive bid process including soliciting RFIs/RFPs to provide robust bid analysis and & recommendations to internal customers/requestors.
  • Issue requests for quotations, analyze and evaluate quotes, negotiate price and terms, and exercise independent judgment to select suppliers based on lowest total cost of ownership.
  • Ensure the contractual document accurately reflects the terms and conditions of purchase, including payment terms, freight terms, incoterms, and other key commercial terms.
  • Effectively use verbal and written communication to provide resolution and status updates to team members, internal customers and suppliers.
  • Analyze root causes of accounts payable exceptions and take steps to resolve and prevent.
  • Foster internal and external relationships to collaborate with cross-functional teams at the facility and headquarters to implement initiatives that support business priorities and build virtuous cycles of mutual benefit.

The Experience You Will Bring


  • Communication skills – interpersonal, presentation and written
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Bachelor’s degree or 4 years procurement experience

    What Will Put You Ahead

    • Pulp & Paper Industry experience
    • Experience negotiating local, regional or national contracts
    • Working knowledge of MRP computer programs or similar systems is preferred.
    • Experience working with Purchasing/Inventory Management Software
    • Experience working in a manufacturing, engineering or maintenance environment
