Process Safety Manager/Process Engineer

The successful candidate will be provided a $10,000 signing bonus after starting the new role. External candidates and internal Koch company employees moving to the new location when hired are considered eligible.

Georgia-Pacific is seeking a self-motivated and driven individual for our Process Safety Manager / Process Engineer opening at our Alabama River Cellulose facility in Purdue Hill, AL. The selected individual will drive and support value-based strategies, provide technical direction, and influence leadership for process safety.  Long-term value is created through the application of the company’s business philosophy of Market Based Management® and Georgia-Pacific’s Guiding Principles. 

What You Will Do In Your Role

  • Provide process safety influential leadership for the site, working with the mill’s Safety team, with specific focus on ensuring that mill process safety systems reduce risk and assure compliance
  • Provide technical direction to achieve the Process Safety vision using management systems co-developed with the CPS Supervisor
  • Foster process safety ownership within the organization through leadership, coordination, and coaching in keeping with risk-based process safety
  • Provide routine communication to mill management regarding process safety issues impacting the mill and support for safe mitigation
  • Facilitate process safety ownership by the line organization through integration of the safety and health management system
  • Lead risk assessments at the facility for anticipating, identifying, and evaluating hazards as well as more formal Process Hazard Analyses (PHA)
  • Apply the principles of Process Safety Competency to make process safety an operating discipline within all affected roles at the mill
  • Partner with corporate process safety and compliance IT groups to develop and improve training, tools, and policies that support the mill
  • Assist Safety and Health leadership with the development of short and long-term process safety objectives, targets, strategies, and measures that prioritize and mitigate risks
  • Provide analysis of process safety incidents and near misses to assure sustainable corrective actions are implemented and detailed technical direction to improve process safety performance
  • Review training systems for effectiveness and making recommendations for improvement
  • Provide metrics to monitor process safety compliance
  • Review and validate process equipment design specifications, safeguard specifications, and operating procedures
  • Coordinate the engineering review capability for process hazard analyses (PHA), management of change (MOC), and pre-startup safety reviews (PSSR)
  • Provide oversight for the mill's process safety information including P&IDs, PFDs, and chemical compatibility matrix
  • Ensure management systems effectively address the facility’s Process Safety (PS) risk profile and will develop and align PS strategy according to the Facility Safety and Health plan
  • Serve as a mentor for technical and hourly employees to make process safety an everyday mission for continuous improvement in daily operations

    The Experience You Will Bring

    Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s Degree or higher
    • Experience in a process engineering, mechanical integrity, or reliability role within a PSM regulated operation
    • Experience and working knowledge of Process Safety regulations (i.e.: 29 CFR 1910.119 and 40 CFR 68, OSHA)
    • Experience with Process Hazard Analysis (PHA)

    What Will Put You Ahead

    • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Engineering or Safety
    • Supervisory experience within a chemical, petrochemical, or pulp and paper mill
    • Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or equivalent certifications
    • Experience in the pulp & paper industry
    • Experience and knowledge of how manufacturing processes work and basic equipment operation within the processes
