Lab Supervisor


Georgia-Pacific Foley Cellulose is seeking to backfill our Lab Supervisor position in our Quality department. This position is vacant due to an internal promotion, which means the previous lab supervisor is still onsite and willing and able to provide strong coaching and development to the successful candidate.
This leadership role is responsible for managing the onsite lab at the Foley Cellulose facility, including a team of about 20 hourly bargaining unit lab technicians spread across four rotating shifts. The ideal candidate will have technical expertise in chemistry or data analysis, operational knowledge, and supervisory experience. This role is responsible for managing all day-to-day operations of the lab, including safety, environmental, personnel, equipment, and testing materials. 

What You Will Do In Your Role

  • Oversees daily operations for lab testing and data analysis to ensure quality and quantity of output meets department expectations and aligns with business needs
  • Oversees and reports daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual metrics based on department KPIs
  • Establishes and monitors KPIs for accuracy and monitors staff productivity, forecasting staffing for future workload
  • Raises and tracks quality issues and resolves issues involving stakeholders and escalates issues to appropriate levels when require
  • Develops, coordinates, and monitors standards for lab policies, procedures, and productivity.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining equipment, procedures, training methods, and development of financial plans for the department
  • Provides coaching and performance feedback to lab technicians, ensuring a high-performing team that meets and exceeds performance expectations
  • Manages operational systems, processes, and infrastructure – seeking out continuous improvement opportunities
  • Anticipates and tracks operational and tactical quality risks and provides timely strategic solutions to operations teams
  • Manages personnel scheduling and sets priorities, assigns responsibilities, and ensures on-time delivery of results
  • Maintains strong technical skills for area of oversight

The Experience You Will Bring


  • Associates Degree or higher in a technical field
  • Two years or more of experience in a lab/quality department in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience analyzing test data and recommending follow-up actions
  • Experience leading a project, group, or team

What Will Put You Ahead

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or chemistry
  • Experience working in pulp and paper
  • Knowledge of dissolving pulp manufacturing processes
  • Previous experience as a supervisor in a pulp mill, chemical plant, or similar industry
