Operations Technician

Flint Hills Resources is seeking an Operations Technician to join our Asphalt Plant in Algona, IA. Successful candidates will demonstrate critical thinking and decision-making skills and posses strong verbal and written communication skills. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to support the team as you manage small projects that are requested by your Terminal Manager. These may include, but are not limited to mechanical troubleshooting, pump maintenance, valve maintenance, testing of system safety devices, periodic inspections of tanks, valves, or piping. A general knowledge of pumps, valves (ball, gate, etc.), bulk storage terminal and pipeline operations, will be an asset to you in this role. In this role you must be able to adapt to ever changing priorities, drive innovation and accept change, have strong time management and prioritization skills and have a willingness to learn. 

Flint Hills Resources works a 9/80 schedule. Monday-Friday from 7am-4:30pm with every other Friday off. This role starts at $22/hour and is eligible for a performance-based bonus of up to 6% twice a year. Employees also start at three weeks (120hrs) of vacation per year.

What You Will Do In Your Role

  • Conduct facility inspections on equipment
  • Interacting and providing training to truck drivers
  • Troubleshooting and repairing equipment as needed
  • Conducting preventable maintenance
  • Sampling and testing of product
  • Maintaining cleanness of sites
  • Working individually and/or as a team, and small project management/execution

The Experience You Will Bring


  • Valid US Driver’s License
  • Experience using a computer
  • Willing and able to work overtime, weekends, holidays and on-call
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Willingness to utilize Personal Protective Equipment (e.g., hard hat, safety glasses, fire retardant clothing, respirator, safety work boots, as required
  • Willingness to travel (with overnight stays) to attend training, meetings and to assist other locations (10% or less)
  • Willing and able to work indoors, outdoors, confined spaces and heights


What Will Put You Ahead

  • Willing and able to live within a 30 minutes driving distance of the Algona facility
  • Mechanical and/or electrical experience within a manufacturing or industrial environment
  • Two (2) years or more maintenance/construction experience in the refined products and/or oil and gas industry
  • Two year technical or mechanical degree in a related field
  • Knowledge of bulk storage terminal and pipeline operations
  • Experience/Knowledge of hydraulics, pumps and valves (ball, gate, etc)
