Market Analyst


Koch Minerals & Trading (KM&T) is a global firm that takes a disciplined approach toward trading energy commodities ranging from crude oil and refined products to natural gas, metals and environmental credits. We are currently seeking an experienced Market Analyst to join our team in Houston. In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining, evolving and building analytical models and other tools to support our refined products trading activity. You will have the opportunity to work closely with our Trading team and the other analysts to generate and develop a point of view based on fundamental research, data analytics and your understanding of the refinery decision-making process. We are seeking someone who is highly motivated, intellectually curious and willing to put in the extra effort to deliver results and help profitably capture opportunities in the marketplace. What You Will Do In Your Role

  • Provide the team with analysis of the global refining/petrochem industries and their economic decision-making
  • Continue the development of our KM&T margin and incentive models to understand market behavior
  • Build detailed fundamental supply and demand models that address current expectations and alternate scenarios
  • Use your knowledge of the overall energy value-chain to help identify and quantify external drivers that have the potential to impact the refined products markets (biofuels, carbon regulation, investment trends, etc)
  • Monitor external market research and aggregate external/internal POV’s for use by the trading organization
  • Produce ad hoc analysis and develop knowledge systems (as needed) in response to new market developments
  • Cultivate relationships with key participants/resources within KM&T, Koch Industries and external companies
  • Drive continuous improvement in data capture, information organization and use of our data science capability
  • Develop trade ideas, communicate emerging opportunities and support risk deployment based on all of the above

    The Experience You Will Bring


    • Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, Engineering, Economics, Computer Science or Mathematics
    • Minimum of 2 years refining/petrochemical industry experience
    • Fundamental understanding of economic decision-making practices
    • This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship

      What Will Put You Ahead

      • Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering, Financial Engineering or an MBA
      • Minimum of 1 year refinery economics and planning experience
      • 3+ years of refining/petrochemical industry experience
      • Commercial instincts and an ability to connect to the probabilistic nature of trading
      • Experience with advanced analytical tools for data manipulation, process automation or statistically modelling (VBA, Python, Matlab, R, etc)
