Quality Control Technician - Lumber

Georgia-Pacific is now hiring for a Quality Control Technician at our lumber mill in Rome, Georgia. This position will be on night shift in the planer mill. This highly skilled technician will support the efficiency of our operations by ensuring all lumber meets specified quality standards. This position gives an entrepreneurial thinker the opportunity to identify ways to improve production and quality.

What You Will Do In Your Role

  • Perform various activities including checking of systems to support successful startup.
  • Ensure proper planning/grading/trimming/stamping/sorting of lumber.
  • Apply problem solving methods to identify root cause and eliminate failures through performing calibrations of various systems.
  • Monitor key operating indicators during production including but not limited to performing MSR testing, documentation of MSR records, and training of operators on quality lumber.
  • Adhere to all plant safety and environmental guidelines, policies, and procedures and actively participate in the safety program
  • Work with the operations and maintenance teams to troubleshoot issues, address problems, and implement sustainable solutions.
  • Demonstrate a self-motivated, reliable, positive attitude, strong work ethic, and respect for others.
  • Understand and use data to improve quality of lumber produced.
  • Assist shift supervisor as needed with occasional functionality as a backup supervisor.

The Experience You Will Bring


  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Previous experience or knowledge in quality control
  • Troubleshooting skills
  • Intermediate computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook

What Will Put You Ahead

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • College Degree in a relevant field
  • Previous experience grading Southern Yellowpine lumber
  • Math skills
  • Experience developing, presenting, and delivering information (communication skills)
