Development Engineering Specialist

Eco-Tec is looking for a Development Engineering Specialist in our Pickering, ON location within the technology development group. The technology development department is responsible for all of Eco-Tec’s industrial process research and development activities. Currently the main focus of the work is R&D support of the Li-PRO(TM) product, which is Koch's own solution to direct lithium extraction.

 What You Will Do In Your Role

  • Manage industrial research and development projects, including hands on work in the lab and pilot area.

  • Design experiments and experimental apparatus at the bench, lab and pilot scales, including implementation of process control.
  • Work mainly with ion exchange, but also with other processes may include membrane separations, evaporation, precipitation, crystallization, settling, etc.

  • Review past work to guide future development on assigned projects.

  • Prepare written technical evaluations of new products and processes, including the review and summary of technical literature, preparation of simple process schematics, preparation of mass and energy balances, and basic process sizing of equipment.
  • Provide process technical support to technical service, sales and marketing, and process and applications departments.
  • Direct a small group of technicians in set-up of apparatus and carrying out experiments.
  • Must possess excellent reasoning/technical ability; analyze problems, identify alternate solutions, select and implement the best alternative and effectively communicate the logic behind the decision to others.

Other Considerations:

  • Physical ability to work around and on industrial equipment, including climbing, stooping, reaching, pulling, pushing, twisting, bending, kneeling, crawling and grasping. Standing for extended periods of time, walking up to two kilometers per day, and computer work while seated for greater than one hour.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment in designated areas (hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, heeled boots and hearing protection).
  • Travel up to 25%, mainly international.
  • Valid passport that allows you to travel to the US currently and for at least a period of the next 12 months. Legally eligible to enter the US.
  • Valid driver’s license.

 The Experience You Will Bring


  • University level chemical engineering degree.
  • Chemical engineering experience working in an industrial piloting and/or industrial R&D setting.
  • Effectively communicate verbally and in writing in English.

 What Will Put You Ahead:

  • Industrial process/chemical engineering development experience in a lead project manager role.
  • Experience in design and operation of integrated pilot systems in an industrial setting.
  • Independent industrial process/chemical engineering experience
  • Experience in battery grade lithium flowsheet development
  • Experience in coaching/mentoring individuals in an industrial technical/engineering environment.
