In Bridgewater, we serve large, global clients in telecom and datacom industries in providing next generation optical modules to support the growing need for data and communications. We are developing optical alignment techniques and opto-mechanical assemblies for Wavelength Selective Switches (WSS).

We are looking for a Senior Optical Engineer with a strong technical background in free-space optics to take the lead on design and analysis of WSS modules through optical simulations and hands-on experimental work. This engineer will be working within the Optical Module Group. and our global engineering team in China. 

What You Will Do In Your Role

  • Responsible for leading new designs of optical modules (wavelengh selective switches) through optical simulation, theoretical analysis, and prototyping support
  • Perform bench top optics setup and alignment for laser and fiber optical system to confirm simulation results
  • Define requirements and specifications for optical elements and components
  • Perform ZEMAX Physical Optics Propagation (POP) modeling and optimization for Laser Gaussian beam and coupling
  • Perform optical tolerance and sensitivity analysis and communicate results in a distilled clear form
  • Work closely with advanced development team on New Products Introduction (NPI) to understand optical performance requirements and design trade-spaces
  • Work closely with systems and process engineers to assess and improve optical alignment and bonding processes
  • Work closely with the mechanical team in defining opto-mechanical mounting and thermal analysis
  • Develop NPI optical modules, identify root cause of failure modes, and support the optical engineering team to drive corrective actions
  • Communicate effectively with other teams on project updates

The Experience You Will Bring

Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in an Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Physics
  • Proficiency in optical simulations software Zemax
  • Hands-on laboratory experience in optical systems alignment and prototyping
  • Experience with optical performance characterizations (i.e. Ripple, PDL, bandwidth, insertion loss)
  • Opto-mechanical design and analysis experience

What Will Put You Ahead

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Optics or Physics 
  • Experience in telecommunication or datacom industry and products
  • Familiarity with glass / cylindrical lens/ prisms production process and drawings
  • Experience with Solidworks or other mechanical modeling software
